Project Overview

I am excited to release this major update, especially since I haven’t posted much recently. I created this to practice my mobile development skills and improve at writing documentation. I’m collaborating on this project with two others, which has also helped me grow my teamwork and communication abilities. This app is still heavily in development but most of the main core features are implemented and I hope for a MVP release soon. This project has strengthened my understanding of Dart, Flutter, and multi-platform development.

Project Highlights

  • Real-Time Messaging: The mobile app still makes use of Real Time Messaging using websockets.
  • Flutter and Dart: I picked these due to Flutter’s ability to be able to compile everywhere so for a small team it is perfect for releasing on mobile, desktop and web while providing a responsive experience on all.
  • Project Management: I started using github projects to manage this project, this has helped the team stay in sync and on track with the project goals.

What I learned

  • Different Standards: between different platforms and requirements for each.
  • Flutter Development: Gaining deeper insights into how flutter works and how a Flutter app is structured.
  • Network Management: I learned how to choose when network requests should be made for a smooth UX but not wasting servers resources.

Challenges and Solutions

Challenge: Login With Google Google login wasn’t working consistently across all platforms.

Issue: The issue was that the login with google was not working on all devices.

My fix: I searched and found a package that would allow this functionality.

The old version of the app is currently hosted on https://chat.estopia.net, since this new version is still heavily in development.

Future Plans

The future plans for this project now is to have this released on mobile, desktop and the updated web version. Then in the future I will be looking into adding more features like end-to-end encryption, group chats and notifications.

Conclusion

Even though this project is still actively in development, I am very happy with the progress me and the rest of the team have made so far. I am looking forward to seeing where this project goes in the future and how it will evolve and improve over time.
